3 Issues Facing Firms Owners as they Grow Their Firms

Like any other company owner, firm owners face growth issues too. But many firm owners don’t view their firms as businesses to be grown and managed. Thriveal wants to teach firm owners to look at their firms like entrepreneurial businesses. For any entrepreneurial company, there needs to be a leader leading the firm through the vision. Deeper Weekend is a place where entrepreneurial firm owners can be together, discuss their paths of growth, and challenge each other with their own personal learnings on their entrepreneurial journey.

As you come to Deeper Weekend, here are 3 possible issues facing the firm owners there:

  1. They don’t perceive their firms as entrepreneurial companies.Firms are known for being consensus-based organizations. Many have partner-based groups that lead their firms based upon consensus. This means everyone has to agree before they move forward on any initiative. Consensus is not an entrepreneurial concept. Entrepreneurial companies have leaders, like a CEO. A CEO that holds a consistent position gifted with that role is key to the success of a company. Rotating ‘Managing Partner’ roles is not an entrepreneurial concept. This phenomenon is specific to the accounting profession (and other professions like it), and it tends to hinder the entrepreneurial growth of the firm. This is an issue for accounting firms today.
  2. They don’t know what growth means. Growth is a journey that is different for every business owner. Growth is not accidental, and it requires a commitment to the process you will have to undergo to make growth a reality. But many firm owners don’t realize that they are committing to a journey when they say they want to grow. They don’t know what growth means. Every entrepreneur begins their journey with passion. This is what got them to start their company in the first place. But inevitably, they must let go of the company for it to become it’s own entity to be supported with processes, systems, and rhythms. And this is typically something entrepreneurs are not very good at. These processes, systems, and rhythms bring a foundation that the company can stand on as it begins to reach new levels of growth.
  3. They have hit ceilings of growth. Every entrepreneur hits a ceiling on their growth, and it is a surprising phenomenon. The entrepreneur doesn’t know what the ceiling is, or what caused it, but it is inevitable. And it must be broken for growth to continue. Gino Wickman, author of the book Traction says, “organizations usually expand in spurts, by smashing through a series of ceilings.” It’s important for the firm owner to realize this so that they can do the necessary work to smash through their ceiling. As mentioned in #2, passion won’t get you to where you ultimately can be. So you have to recognize when you hit a ceiling, and then do the work to smash through that ceiling.

How do we do it? Julie Shipp and Jason Blumer, partners in Blumer CPAs, have hit many growth ceilings. As leaders of Thriveal, they want to share their stories of growth and help others realize their own paths to growth. Deeper Weekend is the perfect event to realize your own path to growth! You’ll be led by firm owners that are discovering their own paths to growth. And you can collaborate with firm owners that are on their path to discovering what growth means for them. Deeper Weekend is an incubator of sorts that will allow you to step away from the day to day and focus on the path you need to discover growth for yourself.   Members of Thriveal can continue discovering their path to growth as they meet together monthly in their own Community Group with 8 to 10 other members (and get up to 25 hours of CPE at the same time).
