We say this a lot in Thriveal: “Hiring is hard!” Many firm owners know from experience that hiring is very difficult to do. Team Building (of which hiring is a part) is just part of the work of a firm owner, and it can be daunting. We all try it, and fail: team leave, or we have to fire people, etc. And we exclaim “hiring is hard!” Yep, it is.
What we are also telling ourselves are untrue things like “Maybe I just suck at hiring?” “Maybe this isn’t for me?” or “I think I’m meant to keep my firm small so I don’t have to hire.”
Team Building is hard so it doesn’t mean you suck at it. It’s just a daunting task for all of us. And we will all be continually growing in the skill of Team Building. No one has it figured out, no matter what you see or think on social media or elsewhere online. We have been coaching a number of entrepreneurs on hiring and they seem to think “maybe it’s just me.” Nope, it’s not. It’s all of us. Please keep hiring.
Sure, you are going to fail at this difficult task but you will also grow in amazing ways the more you do it. Think about the people that you will have on your team in the future, and how you may just be the place for them to land. Think about the team member that may really dive in and begin to help you build your firm, and take work off of your plate (yes, they exist). Think about the new team that have so much to teach you as you grow your firm. Some of those entrepreneurs we’ve coached to keep hiring eventually found the right people in time just when they needed them to grow their firms (because you can’t grow without hiring). They were glad they kept hiring.
Don’t give up. Please keep hiring.
In Thriveal, we actually build classes around the things firm owners need. We have Masterclasses on Team Building:
The First 90 Days of Hiring – what should happen in the first 90 days after hiring a new team member
The Value of Firm’s Job Lane – the value of creating lanes (or job descriptions) for all of the team to work within
Steps to a Strategic Hire – how we went about hiring 5 people early in 2023
Don’t give up. Please keep hiring.
