I have been enjoying Love Works by Joel Manby. It’s a leadership book. It’s one of those books that, when you are reading it – or listening, in my case – you’re thinking, “Exactly!” the whole time. It’s like you already knew the concepts, but it took another person to articulate them and make sense of them with stories and examples.

Love Defined: Joel Manby defines love as being a verb. It’s not the mushy romantic feeling or the word we use when we REALLY like something. We throw the word love around to mean all sorts of things, but the Greeks had many words for different kinds of love. For the sake of leadership in a work setting, the word for love discussed by Mr. Manby is agape. Agape leaves feelings out of the equation and focuses on commitments and decisions.

I just finished reading The Thank You Economy by Gary Vaynerchuk

While I can’t say that I learned anything that’s going to really change the way I do things, Gary Vaynerchuk did confirm to me that we are on the right path.

People care about relationships and with so many connections made via social media, relationships matter in a big way. THRIVEal wouldn’t exist without social media and the relationships formed there.

Big takeaways:
1. The internet has brought the word of mouth effect full circle. Before the big business/franchise era, small mom and pop stores lived and died on word of mouth. Business owners had to treat each customer like the most important customer they had. You never knew what influence they might have if they talked about you to their neighbors and peer groups and business partners.

I recently got back from the VeraSage Institute meeting in Napa Valley, California.  “The VeraSage Headache” (as Ron Baker puts it) is still lingering.  The thought leaders there from all over the world really stretched me and the vision I have for our firm.  I’m thankful that I was asked to participate.

I’m thinking through firm branding and positioning right now.  In a world of “sameness” accountants desperately need to know who they are and why they do what they do.  And even more importantly, they need to know what they are NOT.  If we think we are for everyone, then we are for no one.  I’m learning to narrow whom we serve globally, wrapping our commodity services in heavy value and charging a valuable fee for what we do.
